Project purpose
The project explores how to compare a collectible with a market benchmark while keeping provenance, timing and condition visible. This release shares the engineering explanation and owner-selected roster, not historical prices or performance claims.

Common-start indexing, provenance and limitations without provider values.
Common-start comparison
Choose the same supported start and end dates for both series. Divide each value by its own start value and multiply by 100. Preserve source dates and gaps rather than imply that every day has an observed sale. An indexed comparison shows relative movement over that window; it does not measure an achievable investor return.
Fictional worked example
Illustrative only: an unnamed hypothetical series starts at an index of 100 and later reaches 120. A second hypothetical series starts at 100 and reaches 110. These invented index values explain normalization; they are not prices, historical observations or results for any card or market.
Observed, estimated and interpolated
A documented sale is an event with its own date, item condition, grade and source. A provider estimate is a valuation, not proof of a sale. An interpolated point fills a gap mathematically and is not an observation. Collecting a provider estimate each week does not make its underlying data first-party. Press-reported ranges and trade valuations need separate verification and should not be silently treated as completed cash sales.
Comparison limits
Sparse trades, condition differences, grading uncertainty, selection bias and changing market liquidity limit comparisons. Fees, grading, shipping, insurance, taxes and sale timing can change proceeds. Benchmark price movement and total return are different measures. Any future data release needs source permissions, verified provenance, explicit dates and a clearly stated benchmark convention.
